Process
The Envisioning Tomorrow process is a simple, repeatable method for moving a community from understanding its present to authoring its future.
Every place is made of more than what is visible. To imagine what the future might look like, we must first understand where it has been and where it now stands.
This begins with listening. People are immersed in a place through ethnographic research, historical study and direct conversation. They are looking for what makes this place itself: the characters, its contradictions and its possibilities. How much change has a building witnessed? How does a river feel about a town's renovations? What was it like living here before humans used maps?
A portrait emerges, one that will become the foundation of [y]our future.
Creation is collaborative, beginning with gathering.
People come together around what has been discovered and explore it from the inside. They step into the Characters, walk in their spaces and see the place through entirely new eyes. New conversations unfold. The river speaks to the mayor. The school speaks to the bus driver. The store speaks with the student.
From these exchanges, imagination takes over; visions of a place emerge, shaped by everything participants have learned, felt and discovered.
Every vision considers what a place, people and planet want to become.
From the threads, ideas and imagination a single, cohesive vision takes shape; a picture of what this place could be. This is a vision that is shared around. A story that is read at council meetings and pinned to community boards. An image that reminds people of what is possible when all in a room together.
